Naomi Miller’s debut novel, Imperfect Alchemist (Allison & Busby, UK, November 2020), features two women of vastly different rank in Elizabethan England, joining forces against the constraints of their society. Mary Sidney Herbert, the Countess of Pembroke, was an accomplished author and alchemist; Rose, her handmaid, is a fictional character, a self-taught artist whose mother has been accused of witchcraft for her herbal remedies. The novel portrays women creators and healers defying the patriarchal forces that sought to silence and punish them for their skills.

Naomi Miller  is a professor of English and the Study of Women and Gender at Smith College. She has published award-winning books on Renaissance women and gender, and teaches courses on Shakespeare and his female contemporaries. Imperfect Alchemist is her debut novel, launching a planned series of novels about Renaissance women authors, called Shakespeare’s Sisters.
